Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Meaning of Islam?
The Arabic word “Islam” means the submission or surrender of one’s will to the Almighty Allah, Creator of the universe. A person swearing that there is no God but Allah, Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H) is his messenger and Jesus Christ (P.B.U.H.) is his messenger, is a “Muslim”. The word “Muslim” also implies “peace” which is the natural consequence of total submission to the will of Almighty God. Islam is the worship of Almighty God alone. Anyone worshiping any person, place or thing other than one true God is a non believer. Since everything other than Almighty God, the Creator of all things, is God’s creation; it may be said that Islam in essence, calls man away from the worship of creation and invites him to worship only its Creator. He is the only one deserving man’s worship as it is only by His will that prayers are answered. More Detail

What is the Quran?
The Noble Quran is the Statement of God, the Most High, revealed to his slave through the Angel Gabriel, his Messenger Muhammed(pbuh) in the most eloquent language, Arabic. There are many translations of the meaning of the Qur’an, but they do not help the reader in linking the Arabic words to their meanings. The purpose of this word-for-word translation is to facilitate learning the language of the Qur’an. More Detail Learn The Quran

Who is ALLAH?
Allāh is the most precious name of God because it is not a descriptive name like other ninety-nine names of God, but the name of God’s own presence. Muslims believe that the name of Allah had existed before the time of Adam. It is the same God worshipped by Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad and other prophets of Islam. In Islam, there is only one God and Muhammad is the last messenger. The emphasis in Islamic culture on reciting the Qur’an in Arabic has resulted in Allāh often being used by Muslims world-wide as the word for God, regardless of their native language. Out of 114 Suras in the Qur’an, 113 begin with the Basmala (“Bismi ‘llāhi ‘r-rahmāni ‘r-rahīm” بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) which means “In the name of God, the most kind, the most merciful”. Muslims, when referring to the name, often add the words “Subhanahu wa Ta`ala” after it, meaning “Glorified and Exalted is He” as a sign of reverence, or “`Azza wa Jalla” (عز و جل). The entire religion of Islam is based on the idea of getting closer to God. Although commonly referred to as a “He”, God is considered genderless, but there is no neuter gender to express this in the Arabic language. When Greek or other polytheistic deities are discussed in Arabic, it is customary to use the expression ilāh, a “deity” or lower-case “god”; sometimes the word ma`būd, literally meaning “worshipped [entity]”, is used instead. What is the Islamic Concept of God?
The Islamic concept of mankind’s place in the universe hinges on the notion that Allāh, or God, is the only true reality. There is nothing permanent other than Him. God is considered eternal and “uncreated”, whereas everything else in the universe is “created.” The Qur’an describes Him in Sura 112: “Say: He is Allāh, Singular. Allāh, the Absolute. He begetteth not nor was begotten. And to Him have never been one equal.” (see Tawhid for more). The Qur’an condemns and mocks the pre-Islamic Arabs for attributing daughters to Allāh (sura 53:19.) God is considered by Muslims to be omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, while at the same time above and outside of all creation. He is said to be “in Heaven” (Qur’an 67:16) and “in the heavens and the earth” (Qur’an 66:3), but also said to be “nearer to him [man] than his jugular vein” (Qur’an 50:16); He constantly watches all that goes on in the world, and knows all things. This suggests that He is present in the heart as the supreme witness. “And He it is Who takes your souls at night (in sleep), and He knows what you acquire in the day, then He raises you up therein that an appointed term may be fulfilled; then to Him is your return, then He will inform you of what you were doing. (sura 6:60)”. Placing God inside his creation, in the literal sense, or suggesting that nature or creation simultaneously co-exist in God or vice versa, as in other religious traditions, compromises exclusive Islamic monotheism. It is more appropriate to say that in nature there are signs for the existence of Allah. Muslims do not try to draw or depict God in any way, according to Islamic belief it could lead to idol worship. Instead, they focus on His 99 “attributes” that are stated in the Qur’an, the holy book of the Muslims. Nearly one third of the book is used describing God’s attributes and actions. Also, “hadith qudsi” are special recorded sayings of Muhammad to Muslims where he quotes what God says to him. The ninety-nine “Attributes” are frequently written in calligraphic Arabic as a permissible decoration, which adorns mosques and homes of Muslims.

What are the 5 Pillars?

Islam has five primary obligations or pillars of faith that each Muslim must fulfill in his or her lifetime.

  • The declaration (bearing witness) that there is no god but God (Allah) and that Mohammad is His Messenger
  • The establishment of prayers
  • The payment of the Zakat (charity)
  • Observation of the fast of Ramadan
  • The Hajj (pilgrimage) if affordable

Testimony: The First pillar of Islam. Muslims bear witness to the oneness of God by reciting that:

THERE IS NO DEITY WORTHY OF WORSHIP EXCEPT ALLAH AND MUHAMMAD IS HIS MESSENGER

This statement expresses a Muslim’s complete acceptance of, and total commitment to, the message of Islam. This statement of faith should be declared publicly. It should be a genuine belief, which includes all the article of faith. The witnessing of the Oneness of God is the rejection of any form of deity other than the One Almighty God. And the witnessing that Muhammad is His last Messenger is the acceptance of him being chosen by Almighty God to convey His message of Islam to all humanity.

Prayers: The 2nd pillar of Islam Performing daily prayers is an act of communication between humans and God. The prayers are considered a duty for all Muslims. Prayer (Salah) is a distinct entity from worship in its wider sense, that is communicating your feelings to God at any time in any place and asking for His guidance, help and forgiveness, an ingredient of life which is highly commendable whether in Islam or other religions. Salah takes a special form and content, where both body and soul are harmoniously involved. In prayer, every muscle of the body joins the soul and the mind in the worship and glory of Allah. Prayer is an act of worship. It is a matchless and unprecedented formula of intellectual meditation and spiritual devotion, of moral elevation and physical exercise, all combined.

Charity: The 3rd pillar of Islam Giving money for charity is highly commendable, and the sky is the limit, but Zakat is different because it is obligatory and is given in a calculated amount.Zakat represents the unbreakable bond between members of the community, whom prophet Mohammad described to be “like the organs of the body, if one suffers then all others rally in response.” One of the most important principles of Islam is that all things belong to God, and that wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The word zakat means both ‘purification’ and ‘growth’. Zakah does not only purifies the property of the contributor but also purifies his heart from selfishness and greed. It also purifies the heart of the recipient from envy and jealousy, from hatred and uneasiness and it fosters instead good-will and warm wishes for the contributors.Zakat is the right of the poor in the wealth of the rich and is neither optional charity nor philanthropy. Zakah has a deep humanitarian and social-political value; for example, it frees society from class welfare, from ill feelings and distrust and from corruption. Although Islam does not hinder private enterprise or condemn private possession, it does not tolerate selfish and greedy capitalism. Islam adopts a moderate but positive and effective course between individual and society, between the citizen and the state, between capitalism and socialism, between materialism and spiritualism.

Fasting: The 4th pillar of Islam Fasting, during the holy month of Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. The fast is an act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a richer perception of God. Fasting during Ramadan or any time is recognized as physically demanding but spiritually rewarding. It is the duty of all healthy muslims to observe the fast for this whole month. It is done so that we will know what humility really is. Fasting is also an exercise in self-control whereby one’s sensitivity is heightened to the sufferings of the poor.

Hajj(Pilgrimage): The 5th pillar of Islam Hajj means “visit to the revered place”.The pilgrimage to Makkah, is the most significant manifestation of Islamic faith and unity in the world. For those Muslims are able to make the journey to Makkah, the hajj is the peak of their religious life.

Islam & Your Beliefs

Islam is the universal religion that can give explanation to any other religion or belief. Islam literally has the answer to everything, guaranteed. Ask, for there will be an answer. And every other religion comes to ask and question Islam, naturally. So where are the answers?

Islam And Karma

Many people today are looking for a way to establish a way of life that will bring them contentment, inner certainty and peace. Some of these seekers believe they will find the happiness and peace of mind they are looking for in religions such as Hinduism or Buddhism. Many people have been influenced by these eastern religions because of their aura of mystery and mysticism, and because they make use of techniques such as meditation, and because of the unusual attitudes, dress, manner of speech and religious practices of those who follow them. However, these religions espouse many beliefs and practices that conflict with reason and logic.
The belief in karma is one such characteristic of these religions that are currently attracting interest in our countries. Although it encourages people to adopt certain positive moral qualities, the philosophy of karma also contains several erroneous and superstitious beliefs. It is not possible for these superstitions, which form the basis of the belief in karma, to become a way to freedom for humanity or to bring people genuine inner certainty and peace of mind. On the contrary, they cause even greater spiritual confusion.
The way to ensuring real happiness and peace of mind in this world is the religion of Islam and its source, the Qur’an which our Lord, Allah, the One and Only Lord of the universe, chose for humanity in order to restore the truths previously revealed to Prophets and Messengers among all peoples on earth but forgotten and corrupted to some extent almost everywhere.
{IslamandKarma.com} – This site, by Harun Yahya, deals both with those aspects of the belief in karma that concern good ethical practices that accord with the teachings of the Qur’an, and with those erroneous aspects that accord neither with the Qu’ran, nor with human reason and nor with human conscience.

Islam Condems Terrorism

As Muslims, we strongly condemn the terrorist attacks on two major cities of the United States of America on September 11, 2001, which caused the death and injury of thousands of innocent people, and we offer our condolences to the American nation. These attacks propelled the important issue of the true source of terrorism to the top of the world agenda. Thus, it has been announced to the entire world that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance that summons individuals to compassion and justice. Many world leaders, leading media organisations, television and radio stations said that true Islam forbids violence, and encourages peace between people and between nations. The Western circles that have come to a full grasp of the religion of Islam and are well-informed about Islam as commanded by God in the Qur’an noted clearly that the words “Islam” and “terror” cannot stand side by side, and that no divine religion permits violence.

God commands justice and doing good and giving to relatives. And He forbids indecency and doing wrong and tyranny. He warns you so that hopefully you will pay heed. (Qur’an, 16:90)

Islam Condems Antisemitism

Throughout the history of Islam, peace and tolerance has dominated between Jews, “the People of the Book”, and Muslims. Antisemitism has never penetrated the Islamic World. There occurred a tension between the adherents of the two religions, only after the formation of Israel and the colonialist ambitions of Zionism.

Like every person sensitive to human rights, Muslims criticize and oppose to Israel’s policy of occupation and repression. But it would not be fair to criticize the Jewish faith and Jewish people because of Israel’s crimes. Targeting Israel’s innocent citizens because of Israel’s crimes would be such a big unfairness. Those would mean “antisemitism” and can not be accepted regarding the principle of justice in Islam.

Muslims should stand against the terrorist acts which kill, allegedly for the Palestinian Cause, innocent Jews in the streets of Tel-Aviv or Jerusalem, as they stand against the crimes of Israel in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This is the requirement of the predication which God has commanded; “O ye who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin…” (Qur’an , 4/135)

According to this Divine principle of justice:

  • We do accept Israel’s right to exist. Israel’s Jewish citizens have right to live in peace and safety in Palestine, which is the land of their ancestors. But they should also accept Palestinian Muslims’ right to the same land, retreat from all the occupied territories and repair the depredation they have been causing for more than 30 years.
  • We firmly defend the right of Jewish people in any country of the world to live in safety and peace, without any fear or disturbance. We hope that no evils would ever repeat again like the Holocaust, the pogroms or the gettos. We defend the right of any faith and civilization to live and co-exist in peace and tolerance, with their authentic traditions, customs and life styles.

  3. As stated above.; “The word “Muslim” also implies “peace””

Really! All I see “Muslim’s” doing is contrary to that statement. Why is that? To me, Islam is a “Religion of Violence. So being a “Muslim” means being one of VIOLENCE, right?

  4. Moderator:

Anyone who serioulys understands Islam, even the basics, should know that if a single muslim is judged, then only that single muslim is to be judged, as that is common sense. There after if the Muslims are to be judged, then the entire ummah is being judged. However that rule does not apply. Why? The leader of Islam, the Amirul Mo’mineen, if you know what that means, Mister Justice, is non-existent at the moment…why? Because those westerners that these people hate, non-muslims and muslims alike, got rid of that Leader System a long time ago. So, since there hasn’t been a leader for the past couple of decades, Islam has no serious united ummah, because of the above notion. This is exactly why Islam is at a position of critisizm, especially amoung people who already don’t want to accept the faith. Its obvious that anything can come under critisizm, this is, in truth, the actual reality of this world you live in Johnny.

And btw, thanks for stating your opinion, but please state comments that match to the understanding you have.

    Thanks =)

  19. Asalamalakum, my name is nauman and i am a muslim, i am not a person who reads five times a day and my life style may not be that of a perfect muslim, i am only human and make stupid mistakes and choices, and can become weak from time to time but surely Allah (swt) forgives us if we ask him to. But my belief in Allah (swt) is solid and my belief that our prophet Muhammed (pbuh) is the last messenger of allah is also solid, i am delighted that their are sites like this that explain Islam in the way that it should be explained to people researching the topic muslim like myself and non muslim. It is good to see people not talking about it in a non fanatical way because that wouldnt help our case whatsoever!

I am reading into Islam more now as i feel its a time it more seriously but i am happy with this sight! Keep up the good work. May Allah (swt) bring u all peace and prosperity in this life and the thereafter.

  24. Rebecca Bynum has released her new book titled Allah is Dead, where she argues why Islam is not a religion. Her concern is that by classifying Islam as a religion and giving it the tax exempt status, we are unwittingly supporting a belief system that aims to destroy us.

Bynum says it is much closer to ideologies such as material determinism, nihilism and even social Darwinism than it is to either Christianity or Judaism. In fact there are many similarities between Islam and Nazism and Marxism. All these three ideologies are totalitarian and believe ends justify the means.

However, what is religion and what is not is a complex question. No two religions are alike. There are some similarities between Judaism and Christianity because they share common roots. However, Hinduism is a lot different. Hinduism is a vast set of philosophies coming from many sages. There is a common thread going through them and that is why we classify them in one group and call them Hinduism. Hinduism is basically the collective philosophies of Indians.

Buddhism is also a philosophy. It is not even theistic. In Buddhism the belief in God is optional. However, we classify Hinduism and Buddhism as religion because they have moral and mystical teachings, which are the domains of religion. They also have rituals which is characteristic of religion.

Then we have Confucianism and Daoism. It is difficult to call these beliefs religion. Daoism has a mystical dimension shared by religions. Confucianism is entirely this worldly. The teachings of Confucius are about ethics and social order. There is no mention of God or revelation in Confucianism.

There are also animistic religions such as shamanism. The belief in these religions is focused on spirits and magical power. They don’t focus on morality and ethics. They focus on personal empowerment.

Islam is influenced by Christianity and Judaism and shares many features with these religions. However, it has a dimension that these two faiths don’t and that is its political dimension. While Jesus was clear that his kingdom is not of this world, Muhammad’s main objective was to conquer the world and dominate it. This goal is so paramount that for its achievement morality and ethics can be sacrificed. Muslims are allowed and even encouraged to break the rules of ethics and fairness in order to make Islam dominant.

The Bahai Faith also proposed a world government supervised by a Universal House of Justice, composed of nine elected men who are deemed to be infallible. In this Orwellian system of government opposition has no place. At the same time morality and ethics among Bahais is of paramount importance. They are even taught it is better to be killed than kill.

As you see religions come in all shapes and forms. Cults are also religion. We call them cult because their members are few and they have little power. Once they become powerful with millions of devotees they graduate as religion. Christianity was deemed to be cult when it was still at its infancy.

What is a religion cannot be well defined. Each person’s definition is different and there can never be a consensus. Should religion be theistic? In that case Buddhism cannot be defined as religion. Should it have one god or can it have many? Should it believe in afterlife?

I believe in Bugs Bunny. I worship his holiness Bugs Bunny dearly. I practice my religion by making a bowl of popcorns and watch his blessed cartoons any time I feel tired or not feel great. He gives me immense joy and I can forget all my problems. Tell me why my religion should not be recognized as a religion. I admit that there are not many practitioners in my church. Some children also believe in Bugs Bunny but unfortunately as they age, they lose their innocence, become distracted by other things and apostatize. Nonetheless I know for a fact that my faith is real. Why I cannot form a tax exempt church consisting of me, myself and my person? Does number matter? How many people should I proselytize so my church is recognized as a legitimate religion? My religion teaches me that animals are also humans. His holiness Bugs Bunny pbuh is a rabbit. I can recruit my cat and all the cats and dogs in my neighbourhood. Who can say no? Is that irrational? Maybe, but that is the beauty of faith. All faiths are irrational. That is why they are called faith.

This question will lead us to a slippery slope. It is better not to get into the discussion whether Islam, or any faith for that matter, is a religion or not. If their followers say it is, then we should accept it as such.

The problem with Islam is not because it is a religion. People can believe in what they want to believe. The problem with Islam is with its political dimension. Islam wants to take over the world through Jihad. Jihad has two wings – deception and terror. Islam has declared a war on Mankind. We must fight it. Islam must be destroyed not because it is a religion but because it aims to subdue us with terror.

Instead of trying to declassify Islam as a religion, something we can never do, we can easily ban its objectives. We can ban the Sharia and we can ban preaching most of the Quran because it incites hate and violence.

Islam is a chameleon system of belief. It is political but it operates as religion. It is religion but it has political goal. It intrudes in personal lives of all living beings, not just its believers. Even dogs and pigs are not spared from its onslaught.

We cannot attack Islam as a religion but we can attack it as a political system that is at odds with our constitution and at war with our system of government.

There is however, one thing that all religions share and that is the Golden Rule. Virtually all religions, no matter how diverse they are, have at their core the belief that one should treat others as one wishes to be treated. This Golden Rule is absent in Islam. In this sense Islam can be compared to KKK, Nazism and other racist supremacist groups.
