What is the Meaning of Islam?
The Arabic word “Islam” means the submission or surrender of one’s will to the Almighty Allah, Creator of the universe. Who is ALLAH?
Allāh is the most precious name of God because it is not a descriptive name like other ninety-nine names of God, but the name of God’s own presence. Muslims believe that the name of Allah had existed before the time of Adam. It is the same God worshipped by Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad and other prophets of Islam. In Islam, there is only one God and Muhammad is the last messenger. The emphasis in Islamic culture on reciting the Qur’an in Arabic has resulted in Allāh often being used by Muslims world-wide as the word for God, regardless of their native language. Out of 114 Suras in the Qur’an, 113 begin with the Basmala (“Bismi ‘llāhi ‘r-rahmāni ‘r-rahīm” بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) which means “In the name of God, the most kind, the most merciful”. Muslims, when referring to the name, often add the words “Subhanahu wa Ta`ala” after it, meaning “Glorified and Exalted is He” as a sign of reverence, or “`Azza wa Jalla” (عز و جل). The entire religion of Islam is based on the idea of getting closer to God. What is the Islamic Concept of God?
The Islamic concept of mankind’s place in the universe hinges on the notion that Allāh, or God, is the only true reality. There is nothing permanent other than Him. God is considered eternal and “uncreated”, whereas everything else in the universe is “created.” The Qur’an describes Him in Sura 112: “Say: He is Allāh, Singular. Allāh, the Absolute. He begetteth not nor was begotten. And to Him have never been one equal.” (see Tawhid for more). The Qur’an condemns and mocks the pre-Islamic Arabs for attributing daughters to Allāh (sura 53:19.) God is considered by Muslims to be omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, while at the same time above and outside of all creation. He is said to be “in Heaven” (Qur’an 67:16) and “in the heavens and the earth” (Qur’an 66:3), but also said to be “nearer to him [man] than his jugular vein” (Qur’an 50:16); He constantly watches all that goes on in the world, and knows all things. This suggests that He is present in the heart as the supreme witness. “And He it is Who takes your souls at night (in sleep), and He knows what you acquire in the day, then He raises you up therein that an appointed term may be fulfilled; then to Him is your return, then He will inform you of what you were doing. (sura 6:60)”. Placing God inside his creation, in the literal sense, or suggesting that nature or creation simultaneously co-exist in God or vice versa, as in other religious traditions, compromises exclusive Islamic monotheism. It is more appropriate to say that in nature there are signs for the existence of Allah. Muslims do not try to draw or depict God in any way, according to Islamic belief it could lead to idol worship. Instead, they focus on His 99 “attributes” that are stated in the Qur’an, the holy book of the Muslims. Nearly one third of the book is used describing God’s attributes and actions. Also, “hadith qudsi” are special recorded sayings of Muhammad to Muslims where he quotes what God says to him. The ninety-nine “Attributes” are frequently written in calligraphic Arabic as a permissible decoration, which adorns mosques and homes of Muslims.

What are the 5 Pillars?

Islam has five primary obligations or pillars of faith that each Muslim must fulfill in his or her lifetime.

• The declaration (bearing witness) that there is no god but God (Allah) and that Mohammad is His Messenger
• The establishment of prayers
• The payment of the Zakat (charity)
• Observation of the fast of Ramadan
• The Hajj (pilgrimage) if affordable

Testimony: The First pillar of Islam. Muslims bear witness to the oneness of God by reciting that:

THERE IS NO DEITY WORTHY OF WORSHIP EXCEPT ALLAH AND MUHAMMAD IS HIS MESSENGER

This statement expresses a Muslim’s complete acceptance of, and total commitment to, the message of Islam. This statement of faith should be declared publicly. It should be a genuine belief, which includes all the article of faith. The witnessing of the Oneness of God is the rejection of any form of deity other than the One Almighty God. And the witnessing that Muhammad is His last Messenger is the acceptance of him being chosen by Almighty God to convey His message of Islam to all humanity.

Prayers: The 2nd pillar of Islam Performing daily prayers is an act of communication between humans and God. The prayers are considered a duty for all Muslims. Prayer (Salah) is a distinct entity from worship in its wider sense, that is communicating your feelings to God at any time in any place and asking for His guidance, help and forgiveness, an ingredient of life which is highly commendable whether in Islam or other religions. Salah takes a special form and content, where both body and soul are harmoniously involved. In prayer, every muscle of the body joins the soul and the mind in the worship and glory of Allah. Prayer is an act of worship. It is a matchless and unprecedented formula of intellectual meditation and spiritual devotion, of moral elevation and physical exercise, all combined.

Charity: The 3rd pillar of Islam Giving money for charity is highly commendable, and the sky is the limit, but Zakat is different because it is obligatory and is given in a calculated amount.Zakat represents the unbreakable bond between members of the community, whom prophet Mohammad described to be “like the organs of the body, if one suffers then all others rally in response.” One of the most important principles of Islam is that all things belong to God, and that wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The word zakat means both ‘purification’ and ‘growth’. Zakah does not only purifies the property of the contributor but also purifies his heart from selfishness and greed. It also purifies the heart of the recipient from envy and jealousy, from hatred and uneasiness and it fosters instead good-will and warm wishes for the contributors.Zakat is the right of the poor in the wealth of the rich and is neither optional charity nor philanthropy. Zakah has a deep humanitarian and social-political value; for example, it frees society from class welfare, from ill feelings and distrust and from corruption. Although Islam does not hinder private enterprise or condemn private possession, it does not tolerate selfish and greedy capitalism. Islam adopts a moderate but positive and effective course between individual and society, between the citizen and the state, between capitalism and socialism, between materialism and spiritualism.

Fasting: The 4th pillar of Islam Fasting, during the holy month of Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. The fast is an act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a richer perception of God. Fasting during Ramadan or any time is recognized as physically demanding but spiritually rewarding. It is the duty of all healthy muslims to observe the fast for this whole month. It is done so that we will know what humility really is. Fasting is also an exercise in self-control whereby one’s sensitivity is heightened to the sufferings of the poor.

Hajj(Pilgrimage): The 5th pillar of Islam Hajj means “visit to the revered place”.The pilgrimage to Makkah, is the most significant manifestation of Islamic faith and unity in the world. For those Muslims are able to make the journey to Makkah, the hajj is the peak of their religious life.

Islam And Karma

Many people today are looking for a way to establish a way of life that will bring them contentment, inner certainty and peace. Some of these seekers believe they will find the happiness and peace of mind they are looking for in religions such as Hinduism or Buddhism. Many people have been influenced by these eastern religions because of their aura of mystery and mysticism, and because they make use of techniques such as meditation, and because of the unusual attitudes, dress, manner of speech and religious practices of those who follow them. However, these religions espouse many beliefs and practices that conflict with reason and logic.
The belief in karma is one such characteristic of these religions that are currently attracting interest in our countries. Although it encourages people to adopt certain positive moral qualities, the philosophy of karma also contains several erroneous and superstitious beliefs. It is not possible for these superstitions, which form the basis of the belief in karma, to become a way to freedom for humanity or to bring people genuine inner certainty and peace of mind. On the contrary, they cause even greater spiritual confusion.
The way to ensuring real happiness and peace of mind in this world is the religion of Islam and its source, the Qur’an which our Lord, Allah, the One and Only Lord of the universe, chose for humanity in order to restore the truths previously revealed to Prophets and Messengers among all peoples on earth but forgotten and corrupted to some extent almost everywhere.

Islam Condems Terrorism

As Muslims, we strongly condemn the terrorist attacks on two major cities of the United States of America on September 11, 2001, which caused the death and injury of thousands of innocent people, and we offer our condolences to the American nation. These attacks propelled the important issue of the true source of terrorism to the top of the world agenda. Thus, it has been announced to the entire world that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance that summons individuals to compassion and justice. Many world leaders, leading media organisations, television and radio stations said that true Islam forbids violence, and encourages peace between people and between nations. The Western circles that have come to a full grasp of the religion of Islam and are well-informed about Islam as commanded by God in the Qur’an noted clearly that the words “Islam” and “terror” cannot stand side by side, and that no divine religion permits violence.

God commands justice and doing good and giving to relatives. And He forbids indecency and doing wrong and tyranny. He warns you so that hopefully you will pay heed. (Qur’an, 16:90)

Islam Condems Antisemitism

Throughout the history of Islam, peace and tolerance has dominated between Jews, “the People of the Book”, and Muslims. Antisemitism has never penetrated the Islamic World. There occurred a tension between the adherents of the two religions, only after the formation of Israel and the colonialist ambitions of Zionism.

Like every person sensitive to human rights, Muslims criticize and oppose to Israel’s policy of occupation and repression. But it would not be fair to criticize the Jewish faith and Jewish people because of Israel’s crimes. Targeting Israel’s innocent citizens because of Israel’s crimes would be such a big unfairness. Those would mean “antisemitism” and can not be accepted regarding the principle of justice in Islam.

Muslims should stand against the terrorist acts which kill, allegedly for the Palestinian Cause, innocent Jews in the streets of Tel-Aviv or Jerusalem, as they stand against the crimes of Israel in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This is the requirement of the predication which God has commanded; “O ye who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin…” (Qur’an , 4/135)

According to this Divine principle of justice:

• We do accept Israel’s right to exist. Israel’s Jewish citizens have right to live in peace and safety in Palestine, which is the land of their ancestors. But they should also accept Palestinian Muslims’ right to the same land, retreat from all the occupied territories and repair the depredation they have been causing for more than 30 years.
• We firmly defend the right of Jewish people in any country of the world to live in safety and peace, without any fear or disturbance. We hope that no evils would ever repeat again like the Holocaust, the pogroms or the gettos. We defend the right of any faith and civilization to live and co-exist in peace and tolerance, with their authentic traditions, customs and life styles.
